2008 Oregon Economics Challenge

The Oregon Council on Economic Education and the Center for Economic Education at Mt. Hood Community College announce the 2008 Oregon Economics Challenge. Now all high school students can participate in this year's Economics Challenge Online at no monetary cost!

The Oregon Economics Challenge competition pits the sharpest high school students from around the state against each other in a test of their economic understanding and reasoning abilities. The Oregon Economics Challenge has introduced an online version so students from all over the state can participate in the qualifying competition. The online competition will take place anytime from March 1 through April 4.

Teachers should go to the program website, click on Oregon and register as a teacher. You can then create as many teams as you like. The on-line economics challenge must be taken between March 1 and April 4. Your teams will compete online in two separate divisions: David Ricardo (for students enrolled in one-semester or less general economics courses which include introductory economic concepts) and Adam Smith (for students enrolled in AP-Economics, IB, honors, two-semester, or any other advanced courses in economics). Student teams may consist of up to four members. Up to 20 teams from the qualifying competition will be invited to the State Finals on Wednesday, April 9 at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham. To encourage participation from all over Oregon, travel stipends may be available for the State Competition.

At the State Finals in Gresham on April 9, there will be three preliminary rounds of competition (microeconomics, macroeconomics, and current events/international economics). The top two teams in each division will participate in a final round using a college-bowl format. Each student winner in the two divisions will be awarded a $100 savings bond and be invited to participate in the Western Regional Competition, which is funded by the Goldman Sachs Foundation and the National Council on Economic Education. Winners from the Regional competition will be invited to participate in the National finals and will receive travel funding from the National Council on Economic Education.
